ADC Demands Explanation for President Tinubu’s Five-Day Absence After BRICS Summit

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised serious concerns over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unexplained five-day disappearance from public view following his return from the 2025 BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

President Tinubu, who returned to Nigeria in the early hours of Sunday, was last seen publicly on Monday, July 7, when the summit ended. His absence has sparked widespread speculation and drawn criticism from opposition leaders, particularly regarding the lack of transparency and accountability from the presidency.

ADC Criticizes Lack of Transparency in Leadership In a statement signed by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, Interim National Publicity Secretary of the ADC and spokesperson for the opposition coalition, the party expressed deep disappointment at what it described as an “unexplained delay” in the President’s return to duty... “Five days is a significant gap in national leadership, especially for a country grappling with high levels of insecurity and economic instability,” Abdullahi said. “The President was not on vacation; he was on official assignment. Those five days cannot be dismissed, and Nigerians deserve a clear explanation.”

The ADC noted that other world leaders promptly resumed official duties and addressed their citizens after the summit. In contrast, President Tinubu’s prolonged silence has left Nigerians uncertain about his whereabouts and activities during that period.

A Pattern of Unexplained Absences

The party accused the Tinubu administration of continuing a trend of secretive absences. It referenced multiple instances in 2024 where the President allegedly disappeared from public view without prior notice or official clarification—these included a two-week trip to France, a nine-day break after the World Economic Forum, and a six-day silence following a China visit.

“These mysterious disappearances damage Nigeria’s international image and create unnecessary tension at home. A president who frequently vanishes without explanation breeds mistrust and weakens public confidence,” the statement warned.

Calls for Accountability and Open Governance

The ADC emphasized that the government’s repeated failure to communicate with citizens is undermining its credibility. “A leader who disappears cannot effectively address the crises facing the nation,” Abdullahi asserted. “Moreover, a ruling party that defends these absences shows contempt for the people and a disregard for democratic accountability.”

The ADC urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and demand transparency from those in power, especially as the country faces worsening economic conditions and security threats.
