Nigerian Gospel Singer Otitoju Moses Sesan and Eight Others Jailed for Cybercrime in Ilorin

In a major anti-cybercrime sweep, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of Nigerian gospel singer, Otitoju Moses Sesan, along with eight others, for offenses ranging from cybercrime to conspiracy and fraudulent retention of funds. The judgments were delivered in Ilorin, Kwara State.

Otitoju Moses Sesan, a 31-year-old singer from Iyamoye in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, was sentenced to six months in prison by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court, Ilorin. According to EFCC investigators, Sesan retained over ₦8.4 million in his UBA account — proceeds traced back to unlawful online activities.

The charge against him read in part: “That you, OTITOJU MOSES SESAN, sometime between October 2024 and December 2025, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did retain control of the gross sum of ₦8,404,339 in your UBA account, being proceeds of criminal conduct, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 17(a) and (b) of the EFCC Act, 2004.”... Other Convictions Linked to the Case Alongside Otitoju, three other suspects — Ayodele Joseph Daisi, Adeoye Joseph, and Abubakar Aliyu Abdulmalik — were convicted of similar offenses.

Ayodele Joseph Daisi was sentenced to eight months imprisonment without an option of a fine after being found guilty of retaining ₦243,750. His Techno 19 smartphone was forfeited to the Federal Government.

Adeoye Joseph, from Okene in Kogi State, was sentenced to eight months in prison. In addition to the jail term, the court ordered the forfeiture of $220 in cash, an iPhone 13, and a Techno Pop 9 phone.

Abubakar Aliyu Abdulmalik received a six-month sentence. His iPhone 16 and Samsung S10 were also ordered forfeited.

The EFCC’s legal team — comprising Aliyu Adebayo, Sesan Ola, Rashidat Alao, and Mustapha Kaigama — presented solid evidence, including confessional statements and financial traces, which were accepted by the court.

Additional Convictions by Kwara State High Court

In a related operation, Justices Haleema Saleeman and Sulaiman Akanbi of the Kwara State High Court handed down prison sentences to five other individuals for similar offenses.

Abdulkadir Taofeek was sentenced to three years in prison, with an option of a ₦500,000 fine. He was also ordered to forfeit ₦800,000, an iPhone 14 Pro Max, and a Samsung smartphone.

Emeka Oluwatobi Achi, Isaac Babalola Oluwafemi, and Afolabi Faith Olatoye were each sentenced to six months imprisonment, with an option of ₦100,000 fines.

Additionally, Emeka was directed to refund ₦3.35 million within three months and to report to the EFCC office every two weeks with his parents until full repayment is completed.

These convictions highlight the EFCC’s continued efforts to crack down on cybercrime and ensure justice is served in Nigeria’s fight against financial misconduct.
