The Nigerian film industry is set to welcome a major player with the upcoming launch of Kava, a new streaming service dedicated to Nollywood and African content. Backed by industry powerhouses InkBlot Studios and Filmhouse Group, Kava promises to create a dynamic digital ecosystem that amplifies African stories and brings them to global audiences.

Scheduled for an official debut in August 2025, the platform aims to do what global giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime have struggled to achieve—build a profitable and sustainable streaming model tailored to Nollywood.

The launch event on March 24 was a vibrant celebration of African entertainment. A New Chapter for Nollywood Streaming Nollywood’s distribution model has evolved from DVD rentals to cinema screens, and now to online streaming. While international platforms like Netflix and Amazon have invested in Nigerian content, they have yet to fully unlock its global potential. Local pioneers like IrokoTV faced challenges due to low broadband penetration and high operating costs, leading to market exits despite years of effort and heavy investments.

Kava’s product head, Damola Ademola, believes the time is right. “IrokoTV was ahead of its time,” he explained. “Now, with better internet access and a global appetite for African content, streaming Nollywood films is a much easier sell.” He compared Kava’s vision to niche services such as Crunchyroll for anime and Shudder for horror, stating that Nollywood can build a similar loyal audience worldwide.

Content, Originals, and Global Reach

At its launch, Kava will feature over 30 premium Nollywood titles, with new releases added weekly. Upcoming titles include Alakada Bad and Boujee, Owambe Thieves, What About Us, and House Job. Beyond licensed content, Kava is committed to producing original films and series that reflect diverse African cultures, languages, and identities.

Co-CEO Chinaza Onuzo emphasized that the platform’s strength lies in showcasing stories that resonate globally. “Our content travels well. Once people outside Africa see the richness of our narratives, they’ll fall in love with Nollywood,” he said.

Investment and Future Plans

Kava has secured funding from Vested World, TLG Capital, and other private investors, with plans to expand across Africa and Europe, starting with the UK. The platform also intends to highlight African music, fashion, and culture, creating a holistic entertainment experience similar to the global rise of Afrobeats.

As Nollywood continues to grow its global footprint, Kava’s entry could mark a turning point, setting a new benchmark for African digital content distribution.
