My Wife as First Investor and Toughest Critic: M.I Abaga

Veteran Nigerian rapper Jude Abaga, popularly known as M.I Abaga, recently opened up on the Outside The Box podcast about the pivotal role his wife, Eniola Mafe-Abaga, plays in both his personal life and the creative ventures he leads, including TASCK.

He revealed that the very first financial boost for his creative and advocacy agency, TASCK, came courtesy of his wife. In his words, “the very first cheque that came in was from her,” underscoring her role as his first investor and foundational pillar of support.

Her involvement doesn’t end there—she not only films his performances and reviews his creative designs but also crafts extensive written feedback on his ideas, sometimes providing ten-page analyses before he’s fully processed his thoughts.

Balancing both her career and his, Eniola consistently shows up: attending meetings, studio sessions, live shows, and even traveling with him to events. M.I describes her presence as a gift that shifted his perspective on partnership:

“Getting married has been a turning point,” he shared. “For the first time, I don’t feel like I’m carrying everything alone.” The dynamic highlights how personal relationships can serve as both emotional anchor and creative springboard.

As a pioneer in modern Nigerian hip-hop, whose breakthrough hit “African Rapper No.1” remains emotionally raw despite its minimal layering, M.I also reflected on his evolving engagement with politics.

In 2015, he threw his support behind the All Progressives Congress with hopes of reform, but later came to appreciate the complexity of Nigeria’s political landscape. By the 2023 elections, he had shifted his support—voting for Peter Obi of the Labour Party for president, aligning with the PDP for Senate seats, and backing Banky W for the House of Representatives.

Today, M.I’s focus has turned toward legacy and advocacy—leveraging TASCK and philanthropic initiatives to elevate the creative industry. “The war continues. Our job is to leave more than we take,” he concluded, framing his journey as both personal and communal.

Since tying the knot in September 2022, M.I and Eniola’s partnership continues to shape the trajectory of his music, business, and mission for cultural impact and creative empowerment in Nigeria and beyond.
