Police Brutality in Owerri: Young Nigerian Man Recounts Harrowing Ordeal

A disturbing case of police brutality has surfaced from Owerri, the capital of Imo State, Nigeria, further fueling public outcry against the ongoing abuse of power by law enforcement officers. A young Nigerian man recently shared his shocking experience, revealing how police officers assaulted him, dragged him into the bush, and forcefully emptied his bank account.

Dragged from the Streets into the Bush

According to the victim, his ordeal began when he left his house early one morning simply to get food. He was intercepted by police officers who forced him into their vehicle without explanation. Rather than taking him to a station, they drove him deep into a bush area where the harassment escalated.

The young man recalled being physically assaulted and intimidated. Despite his protests and insistence that they had no legal right to search his phone, the beatings intensified until he had no choice but to surrender the device. After scanning through his phone and finding nothing incriminating, the officers turned their focus to his bank account.

Account Emptied, Victim Stranded

The officers discovered that he had ₦30,000 in his bank account. They proceeded to withdraw the entire amount without consent, leaving him penniless and without any means of transport. After taking his money, they returned his ATM card and told him to leave.

This is not an isolated incident. Many Nigerians have taken to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share similar stories of police harassment and extortion in Owerri. These experiences, often involving intimidation, unlawful detention, and financial exploitation, paint a grim picture of the current state of policing in parts of Nigeria.

The incident has sparked renewed demands for justice and systemic police reform. Civil society organizations and human rights advocates continue to call on the Nigerian government and the Police Service Commission to take decisive action against rogue officers and ensure the protection of citizens’ rights.
