The Lagos State Government will launch the pilot phase of its digital house numbering system, called the Identifier Project, in Ikeja next week.

This innovative initiative will assign a unique digital identity to every property in Lagos, featuring QR codes and local government-specific colour codes to make navigation, property management, and land documentation faster and more efficient.

The event was organised by the Lagos State Office of Electronic Geographic Information System (e-GIS) and Urban Development, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

Governor Sanwo-Olu described the digital house numbering system as a groundbreaking technology-driven solution to Lagos’ long-standing urban management and land administration challenges.

Once deployed, scanning the digital codes on address plates will instantly reveal verified property information.

Features and Benefits of the Digital Addressing System

The Identifier Project will integrate:

QR code-enabled address plates for instant property data access Local government-specific colour coding for quick location identification Comprehensive details such as property ownership, building approvals, and outstanding bills

Authorities expect the system to improve emergency response times, streamline postal and delivery services, enhance urban planning accuracy, and curb rental fraud. It will also strengthen location tracking in densely populated areas, providing a much-needed boost to service delivery and public safety.

Alignment with National Land Modernisation Goals

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, said the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader goal to modernise land administration. Currently, less than 3% of land nationwide is formally titled, a figure the government aims to raise to 50% within the next decade.

He noted that untitled land cannot serve as effective collateral and often loses value in property transactions, limiting investment opportunities.

The launch in Ikeja marks the first step toward a state-wide rollout of this smart addressing system.

If successful, it could become a model for other Nigerian states, improving governance, urban planning, and property verification nationwide.
