Manchester Private Teacher Umair Iqbal Jailed for 11 Years After Sexually Abusing Young Muslim Girls
Justice has been served in Manchester as private tutor Umair Iqbal, 38, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for sexually abusing five young Muslim girls he tutored in Quran and maths lessons. The predatory abuse spanned over a decade, targeting victims aged between eight and 18, and took place during scheduled visits to their homes.
Iqbal, from Cheetham Hill, was convicted at Manchester Crown Court after a four-week trial in which a jury found him guilty on 29 out of 30 counts of sexual assault. In addition to his prison term, he will serve three years on licence upon release, is subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and has restraining orders barring any contact with his victims and their families... Investigations revealed four more victims, including one who had been assaulted since the age of eight. Iqbal used his reputation in the community to gain families’ trust and conceal his crimes, exploiting his role as a religious and academic tutor.
Detective Constable Alex Dodd from GMP’s Rochdale complex safeguarding team described the crimes as “a gross abuse of trust,” stating: “All five victims were young Muslim girls from good families. Iqbal silenced them through fear of blame and social repercussions.”
