Menstrual Blood and Its Remarkable Healing Power: What Science Is Discovering

Dr. Harini Bhat Menstrual Blood and Its Remarkable Healing Power

Dr. Harini Bhat, PharmD, recently shared eye-opening insights on the incredible healing potential of menstrual fluid, highlighting groundbreaking research that could change the future of medicine and diagnostics—especially for endometriosis.

One major breakthrough comes from a study at the Hudson Institute in Australia. Researchers discovered that menstrual blood can heal wounds in just 24 hours.

When they tested menstrual fluid on lab-grown skin cells, they found that wounds treated with menstrual plasma showed 100% healing within a day, compared to only 40% healing with regular blood plasma.

This fast healing makes biological sense. The endometrium—also known as the uterine lining—is a healing powerhouse. It regenerates itself every month in just 3–5 days, which is remarkably fast compared to other tissues in the human body.

Dr. Bhat explains that menstrual fluid contains unique proteins and growth factors that appear to “super boost” cellular repair.

These findings came from a 2019 study titled “Menstrual fluid factors facilitate tissue repair: identification and functional action in endometrial and skin repair” by Jemma Evans and colleagues.

Despite its promising results, the study did not receive follow-up funding—likely due to the stigmas surrounding menstrual blood.

But hope remains. A lab in the United States is pushing forward with this research, determined to study menstrual fluid against all odds.

They are now working on developing the world’s first non-invasive diagnostic test for endometriosis. This initiative is known as the ROSE Study (Research OutSmarts Endometriosis), co-led by Dr. Christine Metz.

Dr. Bhat had the opportunity to tour their lab and speak with Dr. Metz about their mission and discoveries.

The science of menstruation is far more powerful than it’s often given credit for, and ongoing research could pave the way for revolutionary medical treatments.
